Lioness Season 3 Finale Delivers Game-Changing Cliffhangers; Star Bets $100 on Season 4

There was no Episode 9 of Special Ops: Lioness this week, and before anyone panics, that is exactly how the show is supposed to work. Taylor Sheridan's Paramount+ spy drama concluded its third season on Sunday, September 20, with the finale "The Unravelling" — and all three seasons of Lioness have comprised eight episodes each, so the season ended right on schedule. But oh, what a way to end it. The finale delivered two cliffhangers that completely change the board for Joe McNamara and the entire Lioness program, and Paramount+ has yet to say a word about a fourth season.

Joe Comes Home to Nothing

After escaping an attempted abduction, Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña) did what any operative would do after nearly dying: she went home. What she found waiting there was worse than anything in the field. According to reports on the finale, her family was gone — and a "For Sale" sign was posted outside the house. Her husband Neal (Dave Annable) had taken their children and left her a letter. It is the kind of quiet, personal devastation that has always been Lioness's secret weapon: the missions are explosive, but the real casualties are the lives these operators can never quite keep intact.

Aaliyah Amrohi's Revenge

The second cliffhanger was the twist years in the making. The finale revealed that Aaliyah Amrohi (Stephanie Nur) was behind the attempts to capture Joe, seeking revenge against the operatives responsible for her father's death in Season 1. It reframes everything viewers thought they knew about Aaliyah's role in the story — and sets up an adversary with a deeply personal reason to tear the Lioness program apart from the inside.

The Mole Mystery Remains

And yet, for all its answers, "The Unravelling" left one enormous question hanging. One major question remains unanswered: who the mole is, or whether there even is one. It is a classic Sheridan move — give the audience everything they wanted and still leave them starving for more.

Where Does Season 4 Stand?

Paramount+ has not officially renewed the show for Season 4 yet. But the people closest to the production are acting like it is a foregone conclusion. Star and executive producer Jill Wagner, who plays Bobby, publicly bet $100 on renewal, telling ScreenRant back in August: "We're going to get a Season 4. We will, we will... Or I will pay you $100." Nicole Kidman told Collider she'd love to continue, saying of her character: "They've only tipped the iceberg of her... Kaitlyn is an incredibly complicated, extraordinary leader." And screenwriter Michael Idov has confirmed he joined the writers' room for Lioness — about as clear a sign of forward movement as you get in this business.

The cast around Saldaña and Kidman includes Morgan Freeman, Laysla De Oliveira, Dave Annable, Michael Kelly, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Jonah Wharton, Stephanie Nur, and Wagner. With a finale that detonated Joe's home life, revealed a Season 1 revenge plot, and still hasn't named the mole, Lioness has left itself plenty of story to tell. Now it is up to Paramount+ to let it.
