The all-time box office crown is suddenly within reach again. The Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release did more than win the weekend — it pushed the original film's worldwide total to around $2.885 billion, leaving it approximately $39 million behind Avatar in the all-time worldwide rankings, according to box office reporting.

For context, that gap is smaller than the Encore re-release's own global opening weekend. What was once considered an untouchable record is now, improbably, a realistic target.

Seven Years Later, Still the King

Let the strangeness of this sink in: a movie that originally came out in 2019 won the domestic box office this weekend, seven years after its debut. The Encore presentation earned an estimated $26 million from 3,060 theaters — a figure that would rank among the biggest re-release openings in recent years, per box office reporting.

The result was described by box office watchers as a demonstration that a major franchise film can still attract a sizable audience during a theatrical return. After years of hand-wringing about the death of the theatrical experience, the Avengers simply showed up and proved the obituaries premature.
